When the former U.S. Air Force barracks south of Darmstadt became available for redevelopment, it provided the ideal location for “smart city” urban development. This term subsumes a large number of sub-compartments that only become functional and implementable when bundled into a comprehensive urban sustainability and strategy concept.
The Smart Woodland District mission statement is the development of a new urban quarter with a unique identity and atmosphere: Compact, future-oriented and socially mixed.
The goal is a space-saving (and thus resource-optimized), robust urban community.
Existing buildings on the listed barrack yard will be integrated with the new, thus preserving the historical traces in the new city district, creating attractive combinations of old and new.
This urban planning concept requires only minor adjustments to the existing topography. The compact design preserves generous fresh air corridors in the north and south.
