  • Mexikoplatz is a residential and decorative square in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf and the forecourt of the S-Bahn station of the same name. It was given its current name in 1959 in reference to the surrounding streets, some of which are named after Central and South American countries and capitals. On the occasion of Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987, the square was redeveloped, the S-Bahn station was named ‘Mexikoplatz’ and was designated a garden monument.
The reason for the architectural design of the underground station is the planned naming as ‘Mexikoplatz underground station’.
The design of the supports abstracts an ‘X’: the disc-like design of the support element only takes on the outer, lateral contour of the X shape, while the top and bottom remain closed. The row of these supporting elements creates a widening at the height of the passengers’ visual horizon. This improves the overview of the station and increases the visibility of the platform opposite. At the same time, a specific, concise and recognisable element is created for this underground station.
Another architectural element is the bold colour scheme. Colourful surfaces appear on the vertical surfaces, while the floor and ceiling are largely monochrome.
